“You’re trespassing. Turn back.” Her soft voice enveloped his mind like a fog. She was flanked by two majestic unicorns, you could say they were guarding her.

The man’s eyes glanced over her as he fixated on the unicorns. His wife was lying at home, mortally ill, hours away from being taken by Death. The rare medicine of crushed unicorn horn was his only chance to save her.

“Turn back.” She gazed at him, heavy-lidded, looking tired and bored at the same time. “You’re not the first to try”

He hastily tried to think of a way to trick her, in the end she was just a fragile girl in the middle of the forest. He stalked forward, unsheathing his knife, thinking only of his wife. The fog seemed to coat his shirt and trousers.

The girl looked even more drained. “I warned you, human”. She turned to him, glowing as bright as the unicorns and took one step forward.

All of a sudden, he felt dizzy. She took a second step forward. His legs no longer listened to him. She took a third step and he collapsed, fog obscuring everything.

He woke up on the edge of the forest, realising there was no hope. Stumbling back towards the house, he prepared himself to bid his beloved wife goodbye.

Yet, when he opened the door, he saw her running towards him, her cheeks rosy and full of life. Disbelieving, he tightly embraced his love, tears of joy running down his face. As she gently wiped away his tears, the man noticed a lock of silky, moon-white hair tied delicately around her wrist.
